Boise winters are cold enough and long enough that a heated bathroom floor stops being a luxury detail somewhere around the second week of January. Electric radiant is inexpensive to add while a floor is already open, and it is close to invisible once tile is down.
It also has to be planned, not improvised. The heat layout, the sensor, the thermostat location and the electrical circuit all need to be settled before the floor is torn out.
Layout: heat where you stand
Heating cable goes in the open floor, not under the vanity, tub, toilet flange or a fixed cabinet run. We map the actual free floor area first, then size the mat or cable to it. Undersizing leaves cold strips at the door; oversizing means cable that cannot be cut and has nowhere to go.
The sensor decides how well it works
The floor sensor gets placed centered between two cable runs, never touching or crossing them, and set in its own conduit loop so it can be replaced without breaking tile. A misplaced sensor makes the system read hot and cycle off early, which is the usual reason a heated floor feels disappointing.
Electrical planning happens early
Radiant floors need a dedicated GFCI-protected circuit sized to the system, and the thermostat needs a location that is both reachable and outside the bathroom's wet zone. We coordinate this with a licensed electrician during planning rather than discovering a panel limitation the week of install.
Embedded, tested and documented
The cable is tested with a meter before installation, again after it is embedded, and again after tile is set — so if something damages it, we know exactly which stage it happened in. It gets embedded in self-leveler or mortar, never left with air pockets under the tile, and we hand you the system documentation at the end.
How the work runs
Plan
Map the heated area, size the system, choose thermostat location and confirm the circuit.
Prep
Prepare the substrate, add insulation board where the floor sits on slab.
Install & test
Lay mat or cable, set the sensor, meter-test, and embed.
Tile
Set tile over the embedded system with full mortar coverage.
Commission
Electrician terminates the thermostat; we program it and walk you through it.
Questions about heated tile floors
- Does a heated floor replace my furnace?
- In a bathroom or entry it usually functions as comfort heat rather than the room's only heat source. Whether it can carry a room on its own depends on the room's heat loss, insulation and window area, which is a calculation, not a guess.
- What does it cost to run?
- It depends on your rate, the heated square footage and how you schedule it. Most people run it on a timer for a few hours a day rather than continuously. We can tell you the system's wattage so you can work the numbers against your own utility rate — we will not quote you a monthly figure we cannot verify.
- Can heat be added without replacing the floor?
- Not for a mat or cable system — those live under the tile. If the tile is staying, the practical options are different, and we will say so rather than sell you a floor you did not need.
- What if the cable gets damaged?
- It is testable at every stage, which is why we meter it before, during and after. A fault located during install is a repair. That is exactly why we do not skip the testing steps.
